01

Start with the Mont-Blanc Express

The train is the simplest backbone for many car-free days. It links the villages of the valley, including Les Houches, Chamonix, Les Praz, Argentière and Vallorcine. Grand Cerf guests receive a guest card: while it is valid, local Mont-Blanc Express journeys between Servoz and Vallorcine are free.

02

Use Chamonix Mobilité for the gaps

The bus network is useful for ski areas, village centres and journeys that do not line up neatly with the train. The guest card is not itself a bus ticket, but it gives access to reduced multi-day fares. A valid Compagnie du Mont-Blanc ski pass or summer Multipass can also be used on the bus under the network’s current rules.

03

Arriving from Geneva

For the easiest arrival with luggage, book an airport coach or transfer to the Chamonix Valley, then continue to Taconnaz by local transport or taxi. A rail journey is also possible, normally with changes. Confirm the final connection before travel, especially in the evening or during engineering works.

04

Plan evenings before you go out

Daytime travel is straightforward, but late services and demand-responsive night buses vary by season and may require advance booking. Check the live timetable before dinner or an evening event, and keep a local taxi number as a backup.

Easy days from Grand Cerf

Three car-free day ideas

These are route ideas rather than fixed timetables. Check live services, lift openings and weather before leaving.

Chamonix centre & Aiguille du Midi

Idea 1

Take the Mont-Blanc Express towards Chamonix, explore the pedestrian centre, then walk to the Aiguille du Midi departure station. Reserve lift tickets in busy periods and allow time for the return train.

Les Houches village & Prarion

Idea 2

Travel towards Les Houches and connect with the local bus for the village or lift area. This is an easy option for skiing, walking or a slower day with shops and cafés.

Argentière & the upper valley

Idea 3

Stay on the train beyond Chamonix for Argentière, then continue towards Vallorcine if conditions and the timetable suit. It is a scenic way to see more of the valley without parking.

Before each journey

A five-minute transport check

  1. Open the current Mont-Blanc Express and Chamonix Mobilité timetables.
  2. Check engineering works, seasonal service changes and the last return.
  3. Carry one valid guest card per traveller aged four or over.
  4. Buy the correct bus ticket: the guest card gives a discount, but is not a bus ticket.
  5. Allow extra time with luggage, skis, young children or poor weather.
